Quick answer
Angus cattle are pregnant for about 279–281 days, a few days less than the 283-day rule. This Angus gestation calculator uses 280 days.
An Angus cow bred on May 1 calves around Feb 5 (283 days would say Feb 8).
How long are Angus cows pregnant?
The Angus gestation period is shorter than most people expect. A Kansas State University analysis of more than 100,000 Angus AI matings from 2000 to 2020 found an average of 278.6 days, with a range of 264 to 292 days. A separate study of about 10,000 beef records averaged 280.2 days, and research from the 1950s put Angus at 281.7 days.

Many calculators and printed charts still use 283 days, which makes Angus calves look “early”. This Angus gestation calculator uses 280 days. If your own herd records show a different average, type it under More options → my own gestation.
Why Angus gestation has got shorter
The same Kansas State study found Angus gestation fell by about 4.3 days over 20 years. The most likely reason is selection: for decades Angus breeders have favoured bulls with low birth weight and high calving ease, and shorter gestation goes hand in hand with smaller calves at birth. Gestation length is strongly inherited, so the bull you use shifts the date.
- Older cows carried slightly longer than young cows in the study.
- Bull calves are carried about a day longer than heifer calves.
- Sire matters: calving-ease bulls tend to sire calves that come a little earlier.

Using the Angus gestation calculator
- Enter the AI or breeding date (or the bull-in and bull-out dates for pasture breeding). The breed is already set to Angus.
- If you used sexed semen or had the calf sexed, set the calf’s sex under More options; for a first-calf heifer, tick the heifer box.
- Read off the Angus calving date, the normal window (±10 days) and her next job. Tap Full pregnancy timeline if you want every date from the heat check to calving.
For Red Angus, pick Red Angus in the breed list (about 282 days). For a crossbred cow, choose the breed of the sire or use your herd’s own average.
Angus heifers: calving dates and calving ease
First-calf Angus heifers are where most calving problems happen, so their due dates matter most:
Breed the heifers two to four weeks ahead of the cows. They calve first, while you still have time to watch them closely, and they get a few extra weeks to recover before the next breeding season.
Most people put heifers to a calving-ease bull with a low birth-weight EPD. Those bulls often shorten gestation a little too, so start checking heifers about 10 days before their due date rather than on it.
Once a heifer starts calving, give her an hour from the moment the water bag or feet show. If she hasn’t made real progress by then, she needs help. (For a mature cow, the limit is about 30 minutes.) And feed heifers apart from the cow herd if you can. They’re still growing, and a heifer that calves thin is the hardest animal on the place to get bred back.
Black Angus, Red Angus and Angus crosses
| Cattle | Typical gestation | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Black Angus | about 279–281 days | Calculator uses 280 |
| Red Angus | about 282 days | Choose Red Angus in the breed list |
| Black Baldy (Angus × Hereford) | about 282–283 days | Between the two parent breeds |
| Angus × Simmental (SimAngus) | about 283–285 days | Continental genetics add a few days |
| Angus-sired calves out of dairy cows | about 279–281 days | Beef-on-dairy: both breeds are short |
Crossbred figures are approximate; the calf’s sire has the biggest influence.
Planning an Angus calving season
Because Angus cows calve a few days earlier than the 283-day rule, a calving season planned with 283 days starts about 3 days “early”. Count back 280 days from your target calving date instead: for Angus calves from March 1, turn the bull in or start AI around May 25. The calving calculator plans the whole season with 21-day periods.
Angus gestation FAQ
How long is the Angus gestation period?
About 279–281 days in modern Angus cattle. A Kansas State University study of more than 100,000 Angus AI matings averaged 278.6 days, with most calves born between about 270 and 288 days.
Do Angus cows calve early?
Compared with the 283-day rule, yes, usually by 2–4 days. Compared with their own breed average, no: most Angus cows calve within about 5 days of 280 days.
How do I calculate an Angus calving date?
Add 280 days to the breeding date. An Angus cow bred on May 1 calves around Feb 5. The Angus gestation calculator above does it for you and shows the normal window.
Is Red Angus gestation the same as Black Angus?
Very similar. Red Angus averages about 282 days in this calculator, within a day or two of Black Angus.
How long is an Angus heifer pregnant?
About the same as an Angus cow, or a day shorter. Young heifers bred to calving-ease bulls often calve a little before the average date.
